Cascading Barrel

The Cascading Barrel is a welcoming addition to your deck, porch, or patio.  The handsome 15" diameter handcrafted barrel has iron banding and hearty handles.  The set includes seeded mat material sufficient for two full seasons.  There is a 12.25" square base mat and a 5" square insert mat that adds a tall cascading accent to the center of your barrel display.  As always, a little extra care will insure you have maximum results from your Instant Flower GardenĀ® product.

Varieties - Ageratum (Ageratum houstonianum), Alyssum (Lobularia maritima), Calendula (Calendula officinalis), Johnny Jump Up (Viola cornuta), and Zinnia (Zinnia elegans) in the base mat and Green Amaranth (Amaranthus hypochondriacus) in the center insert mat.

General Installation & Watering - Fill the container with potting soil to within 1" of the top.  Place the mat sections (prepared as described in Special Considerations below) on the soil and water liberally.  See Garden Basics for detailed information about Soil Preparation for Containers, How to Store Unused Mats for Next Season, and other helpful tips.

Special Considerations - In order to obtain the cascading effect, follow these instructions carefully.  Cut the larger mat in half diagonally.  Cut the smaller mat in half lengthwise.  Now you have two triangles and two oblong sections.  Store one section of each type for use next year.  Next take the triangle and cut it in half again producing 2 smaller triangles.  Arrange them on the prepared soil a few inches apart so that they form a square.  Take the oblong section and place it between the triangular pieces already on the soil.  This sounds more complicated than it is.  It should look something like this:  <l>

Where to Plant - Full sun.

What I Can Expect - The Instant Flower GardenĀ® Cascading Barrel plants will germinate in 1 to 2 weeks depending upon conditions and soil temperature.  Patience is necessary in this phase.  Cool evenings and overcast days can delay germination.  In addition, soil in container gardens may warm a bit more slowly than in-ground conditions.  After the second set of leaves unfold, some thinning may be necessary to avoid crowding and allow for stronger mature plants.  Expect the Cascading Barrel  flowers to grow to a height of 4 to 30 inches and continue blooming throughout the season.

In order to achieve optimal growing conditions, it is best to plant this product after the last frost of Spring 2008.
